Born: 1916 Died: 1996, Walter Bietila was the leading ski jumper of the famous Bietila family of Ishpeming, Michigan. He was captain of the University of Wisconsin ski team, and a competitor on three Olympic teams (1936, 1940, 1948). He was the Ski Jumping Team's captain in St. Moritz in 1948. He served for many years and in several capacities with the central and national ski associations. Appointed a F.I.S. judge in 1964 he officiated at the F.I.S. World Championships two years later.
