Born into a skiing family, Betsey Clifford of Canada was, at the age of 14, the youngest skier to be named to a Canadian National and Olympic team.  From her 23rd placing in the Downhill at the 1968 Olympic Winter Games she continued to improve to win the giant slalom at the World Championships in 1970.  At 16, she was the youngest World Champion to that time.  The following year she continued with excellent results finishing tied for first overall in a World Cup slalom event.  In 1974 she reached the podium again at the World Championships with a second place finish in the downhill.  She was competitive in all three alpine skiing events throughout her career.  She retired following the Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 1976.
