Asario Autio won several National Championships for cross country skiing in the late 1880's and 1890's. After immigrating to the United States he entered and won the first National Championship for cross country skiing in 1907. As the first national champion he was eventually awarded the Gale Cotton Burton Memorial Trophy by the National Ski Association and posthumously received its bronze plaque in 1966. Following his national championship win Autio declared himself to be the "World Champion" and challenged all comers to take his title from him.
