John Hostvedt's avocation was skiing.  Over time he became a four event official but made many contributions in the boardrooms of the sport.  From 1933 to 1949 he was the treasurer of the Central Ski Association.  He held the same post with the National Ski Association from 1943 to 1954.  He was a delegate for the NSA at the FIS Championships in 1935 and the Olympic Winter Games of 1936.  He was also an official at the FIS championships in 1950.

He was a recipient of the Blegen Award for outstanding volunteer service in 1949.  From his position in the NSA he was also involved in the discussions and effort that established the national ski  museum  in 1954.
