On April 8th, 2022, the late great American ski champion Spider Sabich will be inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in the village he represented as a professional skier and the town he called home, Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado.
An Olympian, World Cup winner, two-time World Pro Skiing Champion and American skiing legend, Sabich was themarquee athlete whose talent, star power and vision helped Bob Beattie build the sport of professional head-to head ski racing in the 1970’s.
An hour-long tribute film, Spider Lives, sponsored and co-produced by the Bob Beattie Ski Foundation, will kick off the Induction Celebration at the Viewline Snowmass Conference Center on April 8th, a day being proclaimed Spider Sabich Day by the mayors of Aspen, Snowmass Village, and Basalt.
Following the film screening and Hall of Fame induction will be a Spider Sabich ‘Party Like A Pro’ Celebrationfeaturing a Bud Light 70’s dance band in the Snowmass Conference Center.
Saturday, April 9th, Spider’s mentor and fellow Aspenite, the late Bob Beattie, will be honored with the dedication of a ski run in his name, Beattie Way, at the base of Aspen Mtn. The public is invited.
Spider Lives is a journey into the rich history of ski racing. It chronicles Spider’s career trajectory from racing phenom to Olympian to World Cup victor to Pro racing dominance, and includes an epic season-long battle with Olympic triple gold medalist Jean-Claude Killy for the 1973 Pro Title. Previously untold stories recount the talent, charisma, generosity and celebrity of a once-in-a-generation superstar who seemed destined to become an industry icon in his post-competitive life. He was tragically killed in his home in Aspen at age 31.
The film, along with Spider’s induction into the Hall of Fame, place Sabich in his rightful place, among the pantheon of great American ski champions. The attending celebration will be epic.
