Ed  Couch was a high quality ski jumper who competed at the intercollegiate level for both the University of Colorado and the University of Wisconsin.  Upon graduation in 1934 he continued to compete until a broken leg ended his career.  He went on to earn a reputation for his abilities as a designer of ski jumps.  One of his early designs was Howelson Hill at Steamboat Springs.  He also designed the ski flying hill at Ironwood, Michigan.  Jumps designed by Couch dot the landscape throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota and Colorado.  He became an FIS judge in 1948 and was appointed chief designer for the ski jumps by the Denver Olympic Committee.
