Gene Wilson was discovered by Olaf Mangseth at the age of 10 and was developed into an excellent ski jumper whose career spanned 30 years, from 1933 to 1963, during which he competed against the best of this period, many of whom became Hall of Fame Honored Members.  He was known as a modest man who led a simple but wholesome life.  He strove for perfection in his sport and was very competitive. 

By the end of the 1947 season he had competed in 80 meets finishing in the top three in 69 of them.

When not ski jumping he was employed by U.S. Steel as an iron ore analyst.
