Ralph Townsend was an athlete and contributor to ski sport.  He competed on the same University of New Hampshire ski teams as hall of Famers, Al Merrill and Steve Knowlton winning many eastern cross country and nordic combined events.

Townsend also served in the 10th Mountain Division of ski troopers during World War Two and was wounded in action.  Despite his wounds he returned to win two U.S. four way titles.

He coached at Williams College from 1950 to 1972 and devoted countless hours to ski administration and organization.  He served as secretary to the NCAA from 1962 to 1964 and again from 1969 to 1973.  He also assisted the USSA during the Olympic Games of 1960 and 1964.  He was a member of the National Ski Patrol and a certified ski instructor and is remembered for his ability, versatility and dedication.
