Merritt Stiles was a noted heart specialist who spent that last two decades of his life promoting the cardio fitness benefits of skiing.

He became a skiing enthusiast after taking up the sport at the age of 55.  In 1972 he collaborated with Dr. R.D O'Malley to write Ski to Any Age.  He eventually became a president of the USSA and the U.S. Ski Educational Foundation supporting the work of Dr. Amos "Bud" Little and Bob Beattie.
