Lloyd Severud was on skis from the age of nine and dedicated most of his entire life to ski jumping. He won five National Veteran's Class Championships in the 1950 and was highly regarded for his knowledge of the sport.

In 1960 he was selected as the head jump coach for the U.S. Winter Olympic team. After those games, he took the head jump coach of the Canadian Ski Team and coached them at the 1968 winter games.

He was back with the U.S. team for the 1972 games in Sapporo, Japan. He continued to coach and consult and served as assistant chief of takeoff for the 1980 Lake Placid games.
