Following World War Two, Willie Schaeffler coached U.S. Army teams in Garmisch-Partenkircken. He immigrated to the United States in 1948 and earned a degree in physical education at the University of Denver. He became an assistant professor and coached the U of Denver ski teams through to 1970. During that time his ski teams claimed 14 NCAA titles.
He coached the U.S. FIS teams in 1966, 1968 and 1970 and was the ski team leader for the U.S. Olympic team in 1972. He held many positions with the FIS and was a respected ski official. He also served for a time as the ski school director at Arapahoe Basin.
