Robert Reid achieved an American break-through in Nordic skiing by winning the national cross country championship in 1924 in what had been largely the preserve of Scandinavian born skiers.

He is remembered for his remarkable endurance as evidenced with his victory in 1926 of the 100 mile cross country ski race from Portland, Maine to Berlin, New Hampshire.  A year later he won the Canadian cross country title.

At the age of 34 he was a member of the 1932, U.S. Olympic team and competed in the 50 kilometer event.
