After immigrating to the United States in 1904 Gene Peterson became active in skiing as a member of the Norge Ski Club in Chicago.  He devoted himself to his beloved sport and served it in a variety of capacities including being the secretary of the National Ski Association from 1918 to 1921.  His services included terms as President and Secretary of the NSA's Central Division.  As a skiing pioneer in the United States he was respected as a historian of the sport.

Eventually he returned to Norway where he was awarded the Norge Ski Forbunds Birkebiener Silver Plaque for excellence in ski sport outside of Norway.
