Joe Perrault became a local hero for the City of Ishpeming when on February 26, 1949 he set a North American distance record of 297 feet defeating an strong field of North American and European ski jumpers at Pine Mountain in Michigan.
He was active in the Ishpeming Ski Club and in 1946 organized a junior club to encourage the development of youth from the area. Among those who came through the program was Coy Hill who won several national titles and was elected to the Hall of Fame. Perrault was also regarded as a war hero as a member of the famous Tenth Mountain Division and a recipient of a Silver Star.
