Guttorm Paulsen competed in his youth at the Holmenkollen, a national honor and tribute to his ability as a ski jumper. He immigrated to the United States in 1928 and competed for Chicago's Norge Club during the 1930's. He won many mid-west tournaments and included the National Class B title in his list of honors.
He became a respected judge for the Central Division and in 1952 judged at the Olympic Games in his native Norway. He became the secretary of the CUSSA and from 1948 to 1954 served on the NSA's ski jumping committee.
He was a technical advisor for the 1956 Olympic Organizing Committee and served as well on the FIS Ski Jumping Committee.
