Steve Mahre

Hall of Fame Class of 1984

Bio Content

In 1984, Steve Mahre’s accomplishments ranked him as the second best American skier in U.S. Ski Team history.
Steve Mahre was born in Yakima, Washington in 1957 and was the youngest (by four minutes) of a set of fraternal twins. From 1975 through 1984, he won much of what his brother did not on the national circuit.

Steve won the United States Ski Association National Slalom titles in 1975, 1980, 1981 and 1984 and the U.S.S.A. National Giant Slalom title in 1984. Both twins were members of the U.S. Ski Team from 1975 through 1985 and skied for the United States on three Olympic Teams: the 1976 Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria, the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid, New York and the 1984 Olympics at Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. At the latter, Steve won the silver medal in the slalom, finishing just behind his brother Phil.

Steve Mahre was on four F.I.S. World Championship Teams which included the 1978 Team at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany and the 1982 World Championships where he won the gold medal in the giant slalom. The Mahre twins skied on the World Cup circuit from 1977 through 1984. There is no doubt that the Mahre twins were a great influence on skiing in the United States and were a catalyst in moving the U.S. Ski Team to world prominence.
