Gregory Jones

An all-round high school athlete Greg Jones focused his talents to alpine skiing and achieved significant national and international success as a result.  In 1973 he was named to the NCAA All American ski team and he was selected for the U.S. FIS team in 1974.

In 1975 he finished second at a World Cup giant slalom race in Madonna DiCampiglio, Italy, the highest finish for an American male racer in that event to that time.  He rounded that off with a fourth place finish at a World Cup event in Sun Valley and three successive victories on the Europa Cup circuit.

In 1976 as a competitor at the Olympic Games in Innsbruck Austria, he finished  9th in the giant slalom, 11th in the downhill and 19th in the slalom to be awarded an FIS bronze medal for overall points performance.  That same year he won a World Cup giant slalom event at Copper Mountain, Colorado, becoming only the second American male to win a World Cup event.  He rounded out the season with the national championship in the downhill.
