Erling Heistad devoted his life to promoting a love for the outdoors and skiing.  He had a special impact on the life of the Lebanon, NH High School ski team which won the state's coveted triple crown for skiing  nine years in a row.  He was a strong advocate of ski safety and physical conditioning that helped his skiers avoid serious injuries.

A mechanical engineer he is credited with building 13 ski jumps throughout the north east.  He was a ski jumping official at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley.  He was also a founder of the Lebanon Outing Club.
